Advantages of Using Graphic Novels
Comic books and graphic novels have been proven to be a motivational tool in getting students to read as they make a young person equate reading with pleasure. Once reading is thought of as pleasureable it is no longer a dreaded chore. The visual support of graphic novels attracts its readers. Boys, in particular, are drawn toward reading materials that are highly visual (Smith & Wilhem, 2002) and for the ESOL student the visual clues help scaffold the text. Graphic novels are also appealing to highly motivated readers, creative kids, and gifted teens (Lavin, n.d.). |
