Miami Springs Senior wins 18 awards at State Competition!
Miami Springs Senior High School Math State Convention
Miami Springs Senior High School Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society attended
State Convention in Orlando April 17-20. Over 1200 serious math students
reprenting 51 schools participated in a series of individual and team tests on
topics ranging from Differential Equations to Matrices and Vectors.
Miami
Springs won 18 awards, including 1st place in scrapbook, 3rd place in
Interschool, and 7th place in poster.
Frank Rodriguez, a senior, won four awards, including 2nd place out of 212
students taking the test in Calculus BC, 7th in Calculus Applications out of
253 students, 13th in Differential Equations, and 10th in Squirty Chicken ,
which is an award given based on his placing in all competitions this year on
the calculus level.
Tyler Thomas, a junior, won three awards: 6th in Analytic Geometry; 18th
out of 294 in Alpha Individuals, and 18th in Alpha Logs and Exponents.
Oscar Sanchez, also a junior, placed 11th out of 300 in Calculus
Integration and 14th out of 212 in Limits and Derivatives.
Evan Williams, in addition to leading the school to 3rd place in the
Interschool Award, placed 16th in the Gemini test, and was elected to the position
of Vice President of the state organization, Florida Association of Mu Alpha
Theta, FAMAT. He will serve in this official capacity for a period of one
year, along with officers elected from different schools throughout the state.
This is the first time that Miami Springs Senior High has had a student on
the state FAMAT board. He is also the President of the Miami Springs chapter
for the 2008-2009 school year.
Ismaily Ortega, the outgoing president of the math club, placed 16th on the
Gemini test along with Williams, and was instrumental in the first place
award won by their mandala themed scrapbook, and the 7th place won by poster.
Aracelis Chamorro placed 10th out of 184 in Quadrilaterals. Mayra Reyes
placed 14th in Matrices and Vectors. Anthony Fernandez placed 13th in Alpha
Logs and Exponents, and Alejandro Lugo and Danielle Lefebvre placed 7th in
poster with the theme of "Leading the green revolution, one problem and a time".
Teachers and parent attending the convention along with the 35 students from
Miami Springs Senior High were Sam Koski, Libby Manning, Luis Trabanco,
Beatriz Llerena, Lisa Wever and Chrystiana Fernandez.
Evan Williams in the first student from Miami Springs Senior High to be
elected to the FAMAT (Florida Association of Mu Alpha Theta) state board. He will
serve as Vice President for the 2008-2009 school year for the state
organization, as well as President of his school chapter. |
