Miami Springs math teams at Cypress Bay
Eighty-seven students from Miami Springs High School and Middle School braved the torrential downpours on Saturday morning, March 8, along with four teachers, two parents, and two alumni to compete along with 1200
students from South Florida in the Mu Alpha Theta Regional Math Competition held at Cypress Bay High School in Weston, Broward County. They returned with 33 trophies and plaques after the regional competition. Click on the link below for the rest of the story.
Overall, the Miami Springs students placed 5th out of 43 schools in attendance. The entire group worked on the Interschool test and placed first, far ahead of all other schools.
Frank Rodriguez placed first in the Calculus division, which, in addition to being the most difficult, also had the highest number of student competitors - 355. Oscar Sanchez placed 11th in the Calculus category. Their team, which also incuded Bernie Amaro and Steven Garcia, placed fourth.
Alejandro Fernandez placed 7th in the geometry division out of 121 competitors. His team, which included Ernesto Sebastian, Alex Rodriguez, and David Rodriguez placed 5th.
In the PreCalculus division, Anthony Fernandez placed 11th, and his team, which also included Mayra Reyes, Tyler Thomas and Danielle Lefebvre placed 4th.
The Algebra II team also placed 5th (Aracelis Chamorro, Linnet LaRosa, Alberto Mato, and Fiorella Lopez).
The Algebra I team, composed of four middle schoolers ( John Mayo, Henry Laney, Pablo Hernandez, and Elizabeth Jimenez) placed 3rd, with John Mayo and Henry Laney placing 4th and 8th, respectively.
Teachers and parents who chaperoned the trip included Sam Koski, Libby Manning, Luis Trabanco, Lisa Wever, Cristyana Fernandez and Angus Laney.
